United Filkers of Ontario

bakka

We are a friendly, informal association of filkers living mostly in Southern Ontario, with occasional visitors from farther away.  If you are a filker “from away” planning a visit to the greater Toronto area, please get in touch as soon as you can and we will try to welcome you. Event details are distributed by e-mail, and you are requested to RSVP to the host – info will be provided to the group members.

Upcoming events as of 2016 January.

On Sunday 2016 February 21 from 1 to 5 PM we will be hosting our annual Bakka-Phoenix gathering of science fiction and fantasy fans who also have a love for music.

– The store is open from 12 noon to 5 PM. Be sure to come early and/or stay late to buy your Valentine the perfect present – books he or she will love! Check out www.bakkaphoenixbooks.com for more info about the venue, new books and book recommendations.

On Saturday 2016 March 19 from 7 to 9:30 PM: Featured  Mini-Concerts by local performers at The Merril Collection of the Toronto Library. It is located at the Lillian H. Smith branch, 239 College Street, Toronto.

Our Yahoo list is an announcement only list, about upcoming events or other items of interest to filkers (e.g. the new Filk Aurora).

You may post to the list, but it is strictly moderated to keep traffic low.  And it goes through Judith! There is also a general discussion list  for GTA/S.Ontario filkers:  FKOfilk.  Also on Yahoo Groups.  You do not necessarily have to have a Yahoo account to join either list.

About Us

We don’t have dues, and we don’t have anyone in charge.  Various regular attendees who step forward and ask for dates host the house filks with a volunteer who coordinates it all and makes sure you all hear about it.  Come sing and play with us!  Or listen – we love having an audience for our songs.  Bring an acoustic instrument if you wish.

We hold house filks about once a month.  They usually run from about 2 to 10 p.m., with people dropping in when they can.  They include an order-in dinner or potluck.  Munchies and beverage contributions are always welcome.  Some of our locations are reachable by public transit and some are more difficult without a car.  Filkers with cars give rides when space permits.  Many of the host locations have pets so let us know if you are allergic, especially to cats.

The list is OCCASIONALLY used to forward information about other events that are deemed of general interest to local filkers.

Should you wish to contact anyone on this list, or let us know about your visit to the Toronto area, please contact me (see below).
